Artificial intelligence, 5G and podcasts: At the end of the year, the consulting firm Deloitte listed the five most important trends for the coming year from the fields of technology, media and telecommunications (TMT). Three overarching developments are expected to have a major impact in 2020.
Smartphones, computers, TV, data centers, software and IoT: These five ecosystems now generate the majority of TMT sales.
Online companies that use these technologies are able to offer high-end solutions to their customers. In the future, however, these ecosystems must no longer be viewed in isolation from one another, because they are now fueling their mutual development, as the current edition of the “TMT Predictions” by Deloitte shows. The consulting firm is also certain that some industry trends will celebrate their breakthrough in 2020.
TMT Trends 2020: These five areas will become important
In the TMT industry, previously isolated market segments are growing together into a uniform ecosystem. These five TMT trends are the most exciting for Deloitte experts in 2020:

Edge AI chips advance artificial intelligence
Over the past two years, the cost and energy consumption for Edge AI chips have dropped dramatically. These chips enable machine learning directly on the devices. Deloitte predicts that by 2020 more than 750 million of these chips will be sold worldwide. The consulting firm is certain that this will boost the development of artificial intelligence. And sales are expected to double again by 2024.

Private 5G campus networks make the breakthrough
Deloitte predicts that by the end of 2020, more than 100 companies worldwide will have started testing private 5G networks. In the coming years, spending on corresponding hardware and services is also expected to rise sharply. Starting in 2024, the consulting firm expects investments in the double-digit billion dollar range every year.

Internet from space is spreading
By the end of 2020, more than 700 satellites in low earth orbit (LEO) should enable broadband internet from space. For comparison: in 2019 there were around 200. In underserved areas, these satellites could give billions of people access to the Internet.

Smartphone accessories become growth drivers
Deloitte forecasts that the market for smartphone accessories, apps and additional devices will grow strongly in 2020. The consulting firm is estimated to be around $ 459 billion worldwide. This would make the accessories market similar in size to the smartphone market itself – and even overtake it in the future.

Audiobooks and podcasts continue their triumphal march
Audiobooks and podcasts have finally left their niche. Deloitte expects the global audio book market to grow 25 percent to $ 5 billion in 2020. Podcasts will raise $ 1.1 billion in the coming year – an increase of 30 percent within a year.
For Gentner, the trends clearly show that the individual segments are increasingly interlinked. More than half of consumers now use their audio books on their smartphones. In the B2B area, robots equipped with AI chips acted and navigated autonomously within 5G campus networks. “These trends initially developed in isolation. But now is the time when developments are growing together. ”A good example of this are AI chips, which now enable a wide variety of hardware and services.
